Road tripping in Québec — key facts

Province scale: Québec is 1.5 million km² — nearly 3× the size of France. Don't underestimate distances. Montréal to Percé is ~1000 km and takes 10–12 hours without stops. Plan for driving days.

Rules of the road: Drive on the right. Speed limits: 100 km/h on highways (autoroutes), 90 km/h on main regional roads, 50 km/h in towns. Cellphones at the wheel: 150 CAD fine minimum. Right turn on red is permitted everywhere in Québec except on the island of Montréal (prohibited — a common trap for visitors).

Winter driving: Winter tires are mandatory in Québec from December 1 to March 15. Rental cars come fitted with them. Some northern roads (Route 389 toward Baie-Comeau and Labrador City, for example) are hazardous or closed in winter — always check conditions at Quebec511.info before heading north.

Ferries: Two key ferries: Baie-Sainte-Catherine ↔ Tadoussac (free, every 20 min, summer — no bridge exists) and Québec City ↔ Lévis (paid, frequent). In summer, the Tadoussac ferry queue can add 1–2 hours to your journey — go early morning or late evening.

Gas stations: Abundant in cities and on Autoroutes. Rare in northern regions (Côte-Nord, Gaspésie) — fill up in town before heading into forests. Price: ~1.65 CAD/litre (2026).
