Private Transfer to Quebec from YUL
Duration: Varies
What is the best way to travel from Montréal to Québec City?
Via Rail is the best option for most travellers: 3 hours city-centre to city-centre, $50-80 CAD Economy, comfortable and reliable. The bus (Orléans Express) is slightly cheaper. Driving is fastest (2h45) but requires a rental car. Private transfers suit groups or airport-to-city journeys.
The most important journey in Québec
Montréal to Québec City is the core of most Québec itineraries. The two cities are 250 km apart, both outstanding, and visiting both is non-negotiable on any trip longer than 4 days. Getting between them should be easy — and it mostly is, once you know which option suits you.
This is not a generic comparison. We’ve driven, bussed, and trained this route many times and give you the honest version.

Verdict in one line: take the train.
Option 1: Via Rail — the recommended choice
Via Rail is the clear winner for comfort and practicality. The Montréal–Québec City train runs up to 4 times daily, departs from the heart of downtown Montréal (Gare Centrale, McGill metro), and drops you at Gare du Palais in Québec City — 15 minutes from Old Québec.
Economy class: wide seats, café car, wifi, reasonable legroom. Adequate for 3 hours. Book at least 2 weeks ahead for fares in the $50-70 CAD range.
Business class: 2+1 seating, complimentary meals, dedicated car, power outlets at every seat. Worth paying $130-200 CAD if you need to work or want a premium experience.
Booking: via vilarail.ca. Avoid third-party booking sites which charge commissions. Sign up for Via Rail Preference (free) and watch for flash sales — Montréal to Québec City has sold for $29-35 CAD during promotions.
One caution: the train from Montréal runs on infrastructure that is also used by freight trains. Occasional delays of 15-45 minutes are possible. Not common, but plan buffer time if you have a tight connection.
Read our full Via Rail guide for station details, booking tips, and on-board breakdown.
Option 2: Orléans Express bus
Orléans Express is Québec’s main intercity bus company. The Montréal–Québec City route is their busiest:
- Departure: Station d’autobus de Montréal, 505 boulevard de Maisonneuve Est (Berri-UQAM metro)
- Arrival: Gare du Palais, Québec City (same building as Via Rail)
- Journey time: 3 hours direct (some services stop at Drummondville — adds 30 min)
- Frequency: Roughly hourly or every 90 minutes throughout the day
- Cost: $50-70 CAD. Cheaper than Economy train on a last-minute booking
The bus is comfortable — air-conditioned coaches with wifi. It’s not as roomy as the train but adequate for 3 hours. Buses are less prone to delays than trains because they use the highway independently.
When to choose the bus: when Via Rail is sold out, when you’re booking last-minute, or when you want more departure time flexibility.

Option 3: driving (car rental)
The drive from Montréal to Québec City on Autoroute 40 is 250 km and takes 2h45-3h in normal traffic. It’s the fastest option city-centre to city-centre if you have a car.
The case for renting a car: if you plan to continue from Québec City to Charlevoix, Tadoussac, or anywhere off the main Via Rail route, you’ll need a car at some point. In that case, rent in Montréal (cheaper than Québec City for one-ways) and drive.
The case against: parking in Québec City’s Old Town is limited and paid. Driving the narrow streets of the Haute-Ville is stressful. A car gives you no advantage during your stay in Québec City itself. Fuel Montréal–Québec City costs ~$35-40 CAD; add car rental cost.
One-way rentals: if you rent in Montréal and drop in Québec City (or vice versa), the one-way fee is typically $30-50 CAD extra — modest.
See our driving in Québec guide for car rental tips, highway details, and winter driving.
Option 4: private transfer (best for airport arrivals)
Private transfers make most sense for:
- Arriving at YUL and heading directly to Québec City without stopping in Montréal
- Groups of 3-5 where the per-person cost becomes competitive
- Families or couples with a lot of luggage who don’t want to navigate transit
Journey time is 3-3h30 (highway only). Cost is $400-500 CAD for a group of up to 4 — roughly $100-125 per person. Not cheap individually but often worthwhile for the convenience.

If you want to visit Québec City from Montréal in a single day without managing logistics, there are organised full-day tours:

From Québec City back to Montréal
The same options apply in reverse. A few notes:
- Gare du Palais (Via Rail and bus) is in the Saint-Roch neighbourhood at the base of the cliff. It’s a 10-15 minute walk uphill to Old Québec, or a $12-15 cab.
- Return Via Rail: book the return leg when you book the outbound — trains fill on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings (locals travelling home from weekends). In Carnaval season (late January–February), book both legs 4-6 weeks ahead.
- Driving back: Highway 40 westbound can be congested entering Montréal on Sunday evenings (17h-20h). Allow an extra 30-60 minutes.
