What are the best day trips from Québec City?

The best day trips from Québec City are: Île d'Orléans (30 min, half-day farm and cider trail), Montmorency Falls + Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré (30-45 min loop, half day), Wendake First Nations village (15 min), Charlevoix and Baie-Saint-Paul (1h30), and Tadoussac whale watching (3h + ferry, long but feasible).

Québec City as a base for exploration

Québec City sits at a geographic sweet spot: the St. Lawrence narrows here, and the surrounding region packs extraordinary variety within a tight radius. Within 30 minutes you can be on an island full of apple orchards and cideries. Within 45 minutes you can be in a gorge national park. Within 1h30, you’re in Charlevoix’s misty hills. Further, but feasible, Tadoussac and its belugas wait across the Saguenay ferry.

This guide covers seven day trips that work from Québec City, ordered by distance and complexity.

1. Île d’Orléans (30 min drive)

Best for: food, cider, wine, cheese, cycling, slow travel

Île d’Orléans is a 34 km-long island in the middle of the St. Lawrence, a 20-minute drive from Old Québec via the Pont de l’Île-d’Orléans. The island has six parishes and a distinct agricultural identity: strawberries, potatoes, apples, wine grapes, artisan cheese, and maple products. The eastern loop (Saint-Jean to Saint-François) has the most concentrated cluster of farm stands and artisan shops.

Half-day: cycle or drive the loop from the bridge to Saint-Pierre, stop at a ciderie and a fromagerie, and return. 3-4 hours.

Full day: complete all six parishes (Saint-Pierre, Sainte-Famille, Saint-François, Sainte-Pétronille, Saint-Jean, Saint-Laurent). By bicycle, allow 6-7 hours for the full 60 km circuit.

The e-bike guided tour with tastings is the best way to do it without a car:

2. Montmorency Falls + Côte-de-Beaupré (30-45 min from Québec City)

Best for: waterfalls, outdoor adventure, religious heritage, quick half-day

The Côte-de-Beaupré along the north shore east of Québec City packs three major attractions within 30 km:

Chute Montmorency: at 83 metres, taller than Niagara Falls. A cable car rises to the cliff edge overlooking the St. Lawrence. The suspension bridge above the falls, ziplines, and Via Ferrata-style climbing routes make this more than a viewpoint. Entry with cable car: ~$25 CAD.

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré: Québec’s most important pilgrimage site, a massive basilica drawing 1.5 million visitors per year. Impressive interior and a faithful tradition stretching to 1658. Free entry to the basilica.

Canyon Sainte-Anne: 3 km east, a narrow gorge with footbridges over a powerful waterfall. Admission: ~$20 CAD.

3. Wendake — Huron-Wendat Nation (15 min drive)

Best for: Indigenous culture, unique gastronomy, history

Wendake (Akiawenhrahk in Huron-Wendat) is a sovereign First Nations reserve 15 km northwest of Québec City. The Huron-Wendat have maintained a distinct cultural presence here for centuries — one of the few Indigenous communities in eastern Canada with a developed tourism infrastructure that is authentically managed by the community itself.

The reconstructed longhouse village at Onhoüa Chetek8e gives context to traditional Huron-Wendat architecture, hunting, and crafts. The adjacent Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations has a well-regarded restaurant serving bannock, game meats, Labrador tea, and indigenous seasonal ingredients.

Accessible by car only (20 min from Québec City). No direct public transport from the city centre. A taxi costs ~$25-30 CAD one way. An e-bike tour from Québec City connects to Wendake:

E-Bike Tour Wendake Huron-Wendat

Time needed: 3-4 hours.

4. Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier (45 min drive north)

Best for: hiking, kayaking, river swimming, winter snowshoeing

The Jacques-Cartier River gorge is 45 km north of Québec City on Route 175. The Laurentian Highlands rise abruptly here and the river has carved a 550-metre-deep valley through the plateau. In summer, the valley bottom is lush, cool, and spectacular — perfect for hiking the valley floor (easy, flat) or the ridge trails (strenuous but rewarding views).

Park entry: ~$9.25 CAD/adult (SEPAQ). Kayak rentals available in the valley. Rafting from the park boundary is possible with operators.

No GYG tours covering this park specifically. This is a self-drive excursion. Take the Route 175 north (Autoroute Laurentienne) — the highway passes through the park boundary. See our Jacques-Cartier rafting guide for outfitter details.

Time needed: half day (trail walk + picnic) to full day (rafting + trails).

5. Charlevoix and Baie-Saint-Paul (1h20-1h30 drive)

Best for: art galleries, Charlevoix food, coastal scenery, foliage (September-October)

Baie-Saint-Paul, the first major town in Charlevoix, is the day-trip target. The drive on Route 138 north of Québec City is beautiful — the road rises above the St. Lawrence with the south shore visible across the water, then dips into the Charlevoix hills.

Baie-Saint-Paul has an outsized concentration of art galleries for a town of 7,000 people — it’s been an artists’ destination since the late 19th century. The Centre des arts de Baie-Saint-Paul, the MICA interpretation centre (cosmos and geology of the Charlevoix biosphere), and a handful of respected restaurants make for a very pleasant half-day to full-day visit.

Autumn: the foliage in Charlevoix peaks October 1-15 — the most dramatic colours in the province. Going in late September/early October is highly recommended.

No direct GYG day tour from Québec City to Baie-Saint-Paul. Self-drive or combine with the Train de Charlevoix (see our Train de Charlevoix guide).

See our dedicated Québec City to Charlevoix day trip guide.

Time needed: 5-6 hours in Baie-Saint-Paul is ideal.

6. Tadoussac whale watching (3h + ferry)

Best for: beluga and minke whale sightings, the Saguenay River mouth

Tadoussac is the most ambitious day trip from Québec City. The drive is 215 km via Route 138, plus the free 10-minute ferry across the Saguenay River mouth at Baie-Sainte-Catherine. Total one-way: 2h45-3h.

It’s feasible as a day trip with an early start (leave 06h30, arrive by 09h30, 3h whale watching tour, depart 14h, back in Québec City by 17h-18h). But it’s a 10-12 hour day with 6 hours of driving. If the whales are spectacular (they usually are in July-August), it’s worth it.

The easiest approach: the bus tour from Québec City that includes transport and whale watching:

Whale Watching with Bus Transfer to Tadoussac

See our detailed Québec City to Tadoussac day trip guide for full logistics and honest assessment.

Season: May to October. Peak whale sightings: July–August.

7. Lévis (10-minute ferry)

Best for: best view of Québec City skyline, historic fort, an easy half-day escape

Lévis is directly across the St. Lawrence from Québec City — 10 minutes by ferry (~$3.55 CAD return). The Old Town of Lévis has forts from the 1860s, good local restaurants, and the Promenade Samuel-de-Champlain waterfront.

The real reason to go: the ferry ride itself gives the best angle on Québec City’s famous skyline — the Château Frontenac, the fortifications, the Dufferin Terrace. Go at golden hour (1 hour before sunset) for the most photogenic view.

Ferry operated by the STQ from Place Royale dock in Lower Town Québec City. No car needed.

Possible but tight. The drive is 3h + 10-minute ferry, giving you only 2-3 hours in Tadoussac on a day trip. • How far is Charlevoix from Québec City?

Baie-Saint-Paul, the gateway to Charlevoix, is 100 km from Québec City — approximately 1h20-1h30 by car on Route 138 along the north shore. La Malbaie is 150 km, about 2 hours. Charlevoix works well as a day trip focused on Baie-Saint-Paul; La Malbaie really warrants an overnight.
  • What is the Wendake day trip from Québec City?

Wendake is the Huron-Wendat First Nation reserve, 15 km northwest of Québec City (20 min drive). The main attraction is the reconstructed longhouse village at Onhoüa Chetek8e, showing traditional Huron-Wendat life. The on-site restaurant serves indigenous Québec cuisine. Very accessible half-day from Québec City.
  • Is Jacques-Cartier National Park close to Québec City?

Yes. The entry to Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is about 45 km north of Québec City — 45 minutes by car. It's a spectacular gorge park with hiking, kayaking, and river swimming in summer. In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. A rewarding half-day or full-day trip.
  • Can I do the Côte-de-Beaupré (Montmorency + Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré) in a half-day?

Yes. Montmorency Falls, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré basilica, and Canyon Sainte-Anne can all be visited in a half-day loop (4-5 hours). The three sites are within 30 km of each other east of Québec City. The half-day Montmorency and Île d'Orléans tour covers two of these efficiently.
