Is a Charlevoix day trip from Québec City worth it?

Yes, with realistic expectations. Baie-Saint-Paul (1h20-1h30 drive) works perfectly as a day trip — art galleries, food, the Gouffre River, and stunning scenery. La Malbaie (2h drive) is better as an overnight. The Train de Charlevoix is a full-day experience by itself.

Charlevoix deserves more than a day

Let’s be honest from the start: Charlevoix is the region in Québec that most rewards a slow visit. The landscape — a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve where the Canadian Shield meets the St. Lawrence — is genuinely extraordinary. The food culture is the best in the province outside Montréal. And the driving is some of the most scenic in eastern North America.

A day trip is possible and worthwhile. But it’s also the most common regret of Québec travellers who didn’t give Charlevoix more time.

What’s realistic as a day trip

Baie-Saint-Paul: the ideal day trip target

Baie-Saint-Paul, 100 km from Québec City, is the gateway to Charlevoix and the day trip sweet spot. The town sits in a dramatic bowl where the Gouffre River meets the St. Lawrence, surrounded by hills that turn brilliantly coloured in autumn.

A day in Baie-Saint-Paul gives you:

  • Art galleries: Baie-Saint-Paul has been an artists’ colony since the 19th century. The Centre des arts de Baie-Saint-Paul has rotating exhibitions. Rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste has a dozen independent galleries. Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberté first performed on these streets.
  • MICA — Centre de géologie: an excellent interpretation centre explaining the 350-million-year-old Charlevoix meteor impact crater (one of the largest in eastern North America) and the biosphere designation. Open seasonally, admission ~$12 CAD.
  • Food: Baie-Saint-Paul’s restaurant scene is remarkable for a town of 7,000. La Maison d’affinage Maurice Dufour for cheese, Pub Saint-Pub for craft beers, Le Café des Artistes for a reliably good meal. In summer, terrace dining looks directly onto the surrounding hills.
  • Gouffre River: a 10-minute drive from downtown, the Gouffre River offers one of the most exhilarating beginner-to-intermediate river descents in Charlevoix:

Time in Baie-Saint-Paul: 5-6 hours is comfortable for galleries, lunch, and a walk or activity.

Total day trip: leave Québec City 08h30, arrive Baie-Saint-Paul 10h00, leave 16h00, back in Québec City 17h30-18h00.

La Malbaie as a day trip: only if you prioritise it

La Malbaie is 50 km beyond Baie-Saint-Paul (total 150 km from Québec City, 2h drive). Adding it to a day trip means only 2-3 hours in both towns combined — not enough to appreciate either.

La Malbaie is better suited to an overnight: the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu is genuinely impressive and the views over the river are spectacular. Casino de Charlevoix (attached to the Manoir), hiking in Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie, and the intimate village of Pointe-au-Pic all reward more time.

The Train de Charlevoix as your day trip vehicle

The Train de Charlevoix is an alternative way to structure a day trip. The tourist train departs from Montmorency Falls and arrives at La Malbaie in 4-5 hours (with a stop in Baie-Saint-Paul).

The train itself is the experience — the views of the St. Lawrence from the cliff-edge route, the regional cuisine in the dining car, the narration. You arrive at La Malbaie, have 1.5-2 hours (enough for a walk and lunch), and return by train in the evening.

For this to work as a pure day trip, the return service must match your schedule. Check the current Train de Charlevoix timetable at traindeCharlevoix.com. An alternative: take the train one way and return by car (if you have a car at the Montmorency end) or by Intercar bus.

Horseback riding

The hills and valleys around La Malbaie are spectacular horseback territory. For a sunset ride through the Charlevoix farmland:

Via ferrata at Grands-Jardins National Park

Parc national des Grands-Jardins, north of Baie-Saint-Paul, has a via ferrata route along the granite cliffs. 3.5-5 hours, suitable for beginners with a guide:

Grands-Jardins NP Via Ferrata Hike

Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie National Park

The most dramatic national park in Charlevoix. The Malbaie River cuts 550 metres below the plateau through sheer walls of pale granite. The park is about 1h30 from Baie-Saint-Paul (back inland). Accessible by car; the canyon floor is a 2-3h hike or boat tour. Only makes sense if you’re staying overnight in Charlevoix.

Autumn in Charlevoix: plan for it

Charlevoix’s foliage peaks October 1-15 — slightly later than the Laurentides and among the most dramatic in Québec. The combination of sugar maples on the hillsides above the St. Lawrence creates an intensity of colour that photographers chase every year.

If you can only do one day trip from Québec City during autumn, make it Charlevoix in early October. Go early in the week (the Route 138 on weekends in peak foliage is very congested).

The honest recommendation

One night (Baie-Saint-Paul or La Malbaie)Couples, food lovers, hikers, anyone with 2+ days in Québec City region
Two nightsSerious explorers, autumn foliage chasers, active travellers

The sweet spot for most visitors: one night in Baie-Saint-Paul. Drive up, spend the afternoon in galleries and the evening at a restaurant, hike the Gouffre River area in the morning, and drive back via Côte-de-Beaupré. That’s a Charlevoix you’ll remember.

Frequently asked questions about Québec City to Charlevoix day trip: realistic plan

  • How far is Charlevoix from Québec City?

Baie-Saint-Paul is 100 km from Québec City — about 1h20-1h30 by car on Route 138. La Malbaie is 150 km, about 2 hours. The Train de Charlevoix departs from Montmorency Falls (15 km east of Québec City) and reaches Baie-Saint-Paul in 1h40 and La Malbaie in 4-5 hours.
  • What can I do in Baie-Saint-Paul in a day trip?

Baie-Saint-Paul has an exceptional concentration of art galleries, the MICA geological interpretation centre, the Centre des arts, local restaurants serving Charlevoix regional food, and access to the Gouffre River for outdoor adventures. A day (5-6 hours in the town) is very comfortable and rewarding.
  • Is the Train de Charlevoix good for a day trip?

The train is a full-day experience in itself: 4-5 hours each way from Montmorency Falls to La Malbaie. A day trip by train means leaving early, arriving in La Malbaie around noon, having 1-2 hours there, and returning in the evening. Better as a one-way trip (train out, car or bus back) or with one overnight.
  • What is Charlevoix known for food-wise?

Charlevoix is one of Québec's foremost culinary regions. Key products: Charlevoix lamb (agneau de Charlevoix, fed on salt meadow grasses), Laiterie Charlevoix cheese, Maison d'affinage Maurice Dufour (aged cheeses), Chèvrerie Tournevent (goat cheese), micro-brewery Pub Saint-Pub, and a cluster of chef-driven restaurants in Baie-Saint-Paul. The Tourisme Charlevoix Flavour Trail is a self-guided food circuit.
  • Does Charlevoix have beaches?

No sandy beaches — the St. Lawrence here is rocky shoreline. Les Éboulements and Cap-aux-Oies have dramatic cliffs and river views. For swimming, the lakes in the interior (Lac Saint-Joseph near Baie-Saint-Paul) are the option. The Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park stretches along this coastline.
  • How many days do I really need in Charlevoix?

Two nights minimum to appreciate the region properly: Baie-Saint-Paul + Hautes-Gorges national park + Côte-de-Charlevoix drive to La Malbaie. Three nights if you want to incorporate the Train de Charlevoix, horseback riding, and the deeper valley areas. The region keeps giving the longer you stay.
